Windfall Lumber

If naure has already done the work of felling trees, why cut down more in search of lumber? If lumber can have a second life in a new application, why not use it? Thats the operating premise behind Windfall Lumber, which uses salvaged, reclaimed and Forestry Sustainability Council-certified wood for countertops, tabletops, wall cladding, flooring and other custom architectural applications. The company has been pushing into the commercial market. In 2013, revenue jumped by 50 percent over 2012; Windfall projects a 35 percent increase in 2014. This growth has prompted a move into additional production space for the 28-employee company, as well as the investment of $250,000 in production equipment.

SILVER AWARD

Spencer LLC

Monroe | spencercabinetry.com

Carl and Dottie Spencer got their company running just in time to catch the recession. They managed not only to survive something other cabinetmakers didnt accomplish but also to grow. Revenue in 2013 was up 35 percent from 2012. Profitability is up 77 percent over three years. The company expects more; it has added new administrative offices for support staff to handle sales and production growth, reorganized the finishing line to double capacity and added a new line of cabinets. Spencer also builds its own components like doors and drawer boxes, cutting the lead times required by waiting for outside suppliers.
