This article is part of a series focusing on select companies who placed among WA's 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2017, as determined by employee surveys that measure their perceptions and satisfaction across 61 individual attributes within 10 employment categories.

“We aim to be a company that is admired by our customers for our integrity, people, and quality of work,” says founder and CEO of Carlisle Classic Homes (CCH) Rob Carlisle. But it seems his employees admire the company for similar reasons.

Combined with the over 400+ projects under their belt since 2002, building and remodeling company Carlisle Classic Homes has done more than their fair share of giving and volunteering. The company's altruistic ventures are another reason Carlisle employees are so proud and happy to work where they do.

Team, Friends, Family, All One In The Same

CCH employees like to work together, and this enhances their teamwork and communication. “I am continually impressed by the integrity of every individual and every aspect of this company,” stated one employee.

Pictured above at summer camping trip, employees and their families gather regularly throughout the year to relax and enjoy each other’s company. The Carlisle family extends beyond employees to include the people their employees care about most.

“We aren't just coworkers, we are all friends. In fact, we are more than friends, we are a family. We know and support each other and each other's families," said another employee, "We hang out outside of work and we enjoy each other in and out of work. I've never known a company like this before!”

Consistently, co-workers praised one another's attitude and effect on their work environment.

“Awesome co-workers to be around in and outside of work. True friendships,” declared an employee.

“The office staff is amazing! They communicate insanely well and make everyday operations go extremely smooth!! Great, loving people!!” remarked another.

Since the conception of the company, Rob Carlisle has been slowly increasing the number of staff, who appreciate the “enjoyment of going to work every day.” In the category of hiring and retention of staff, his company received very high marks.

“Quite simply, we do try to hire for long term and avoid turnover, which results in a good working relationship amongst most employees and excellent group mentality,” elaborated an employee.

“Everyone is such an important part of the team,” added another.

One employee summarized best saying, “In life, we are blessed to be a blessing to others. I've been blessed by this company and all those working in it, so I'm proud that we can be a blessing to others.”

A Small Crew With Big Heart

This Seattle-based company has a relatively small crew of 29, but a big heart for the win, participating in numerous community volunteering ventures, most notably this and past year's "Rampathon" and biennial trips to Mexico to build homes for the less fortunate.

"Our desire is to do good for our communities around us," explained one employee. "Both by helping out those in our own company who need it, as well as reaching out to build up those with greater needs. We build accessibility ramps so people can more easily enter their homes, we build houses in Mexico for those who can't. We helped a local veteran with a terminal illness get his home ready for his passing so his wife would be taken care of."

It is clear CCH makes giving back a part of their culture.

“This company gives back to the community countless times throughout the year, they go out of their way to donate/volunteer/give back,” enthused one employee.

CCH recently participated in the Master Builders Association's "Rampathon," building needed wheelchair and access ramps for disabled or elderly low-income homeowners for free. "Some of these were company planned events and others were just our employees finding a need and gathering others in our company to help," said one employee.

“As a company, we believe that giving back to the community in which we work in is as important as the people we work with and the clients we work for,” remarked another.

CCH earned praise from employees for its high standards of performance and its active level of responsibility and decision-making.

“Our company has a motto: 'always do the right thing' even when it costs us more," explained one employee. "Anyone would be hard-pressed to find a general construction company with this level of integrity.”

Leading With Open Doors

An open-door policy around the CCH office was a considerable favorite for employees, who gave their leaders excellent scores in making time to talk, providing advice, and equally high scores for both a quality work environment, and the training/educating of staff.

“Open doors and accessible staff,” wrote one employee simply. “Anyone will let themselves be available for advice and insight.”

Another employee agreed and added, "Our growth as a person here is just as important, or more important, than our growth as an employee in the company. They want to see us succeed for our own benefit first, not theirs.”

Employee attitude toward company executives was also extremely positive, and employees did not hold back their enthusiasm. “Our CEO, Rob. He's an amazing guy. I want to be like him when I grow up,” commented one employee.

CEO Rob Carlisle (right), his business partner Alex Adolfi, and their respective “better halves” are grateful for the amazing people
that make Carlisle Classic Homes one of the best.

"We have a strong team mentality and the company really fosters and encourages training and education," explained another employee, "Also, our leadership really walks the talk and makes the effort to be a positive force in the community.”

“The owner/boss & office staff work hard to foster a positive and rewarding work environment,” added another.

Its ongoing recognition of employees, as well as its compensation, earned CCH high praise from employees. “I've never worked for a company that compensates its employees so well beyond salaries and wages,” said an employee. “Additionally, I have never worked for a company that values its employees as much as Carlisle Classic Homes and have more trust and confidence in the leadership here (at every level) than I had at any company or organization I previously worked for.”
