What does it take to be voted one of the “best companies to work for in Seattle?” That depends on who you ask, of course, as everyone has a different measurement of what makes a great boss, team, and work environment. Seattle Business magazine went straight to the source, asking executives at five of the highest-scoring companies in the annual Best Companies To Work For survey about what makes their workplaces stand out among the rest—from summer boat outings and holiday activities, to an emphasis on creating a collaborative in-office culture where everyone feels like they are adding value to the team.
Here, we talk with Leigh McMillan, CEO of Whitepages, about workplace culture, building trust with employees, and working as a team.
Seattle Business magazine: How do you build a positive working culture at your company?
Leigh McMillan: Meaningful work and meaningful relationships. We set clear goals across the company, make sure people understand the impact of their work and hold each other accountable for delivering on the work. And purposeful in-person time to foster relationships and appreciation for each other.
How does your company support employees in their career development?
Proactively look for opportunities for employees to take on projects or roles that enable them to stretch and try work in areas of interest.
What is your in-office versus work-from-home policy?
Mostly remote, in-office at least 2 Tuesdays/month, in-office weeks 4x/year. Plus additional ad hoc in-office times and social outings.
How important is cross-team and departmental collaboration?
Critical. We’re a small team, so very little gets done without it. And collaborative work with a diverse group is more meaningful, impactful, and fun.
How do you build trust with employees?
Radical transparency on business, objectives financial metrics plus honesty, accountability and support for taking calculated risks.
What are some fun perks you provide employees?
Annual 2.5-day retreat in places like Leavenworth and Suncadia. We have lots of foodies here, so we have a lot of team meals featuring different cuisines and local restaurants.
