Michael Shannon

Michael Shannon, PE, returned to HNTB Corporation as project director in the firm’s Bellevue office. In his new role, Shannon will work closely with agencies such as the Washington State Department of Transportation, Sound Transit, Port of Seattle, and the Seattle Department of Transportation, helping to strategize and deliver their most challenging and complex projects and programs. Shannon previously worked with HNTB’s Orlando office as a project manager for 12 years.

“Mike brings a wealth of multi-modal transportation experience that spans highway, rail, aviation, tolling and emerging mobility,” said Kevin Collins, PE, HNTB Seattle office leader and vice president. “His depth and breadth of experience combined with his ability to build and lead teams, provide thought leadership, and demonstrate unwavering client-focus make him a valuable asset for our firm and our clients.”

Shannon has worked in both the public and private sectors and brings 21 years of experience to HNTB. Most recently, he served as District Five secretary for the Florida Department of Transportation and CEO of SunRail, the commuter rail system serving the Orlando metropolitan area. Managing over 700 employees and a $6-billion, five-year work program, he helped lead Florida’s transportation vision for all modes of travel.

Shannon earned a Master of Science in engineering management at Marshall University Graduate College and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at West Virginia Institute of Technology. He belongs to the American Council of Engineering Companies and International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association. His many honors include a 2019 Women’s Transportation Seminar Ray LaHood Award, which recognizes an outstanding leader and role model in transportation.

HNTB established its Seattle office in 1960, but the firm traces its roots in the region back to 1912, when the Columbia River Interstate Bridge between Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, opened. The bridge was designed by John Lyle Harrington, a partner in HNTB’s predecessor firm, Waddell & Harrington. HNTB has grown to employ over 250 professionals in the region who help play a role in planning and delivering high-profile transportation infrastructure projects across the state and around the country.

HNTB’s many signature infrastructure projects in the region include SR 99 Alaskan Way Tunnel; Mercer Corridor improvements in Seattle; Seattle-Tacoma International Airport third runway; second Tacoma Narrows bridge; Sound Transit University Link Light Rail Extension, Lynnwood Link Extension, West Seattle and Ballard Link Extensions and East Link Extension; Washington State Department of Transportation General Engineering Consultant Services for I-405 and SR 509; South Park Bascule Bridge Replacement in Seattle; Mount Baker Ridge Tunnel; historic work on I-5 dating back to the 1960s; and Tilikum Crossing bridge in Portland.
