The medical community throughout Washington State, as in the rest of the nation, faces significant challenges.

The uninsured rate increased significantly in 2018 for the first time since 2014, according to the state Office of Financial Management. The number of primary care physicians — the front line of preventive medicine — is declining. Only 6% of physicians practice in rural areas.

Yet Washington remains a national leader in research and quality of care. Dr. Jay Shendure spends his days working to prevent and treat cancer. Samaritan Healthcare Chief Executive Officer Theresa Sullivan is focused on access to medicine in rural communities.

They are two of the 17 organizations and individuals across the state that Seattle Business magazine is recognizing for their cutting-edge research and innovative approaches in an increasingly evolving and complicated health care environment.
