If you shout on the internet and no one hears you, do you make a sound? That twist of the Zen koan is the principle of Seomoz, the industry’s leading provider of search engine optimization software that can help boost websites to the top set of results returned by Google or Bing. The company, which emerged in 2002 from a blog by CEO and chief technologist Rand Fishkin, has in recent years expanded its offerings to help brands gain greater public awareness through the internet. As social media have grown in importance, the company’s expertise continues to change how marketing is performed effectively, to bring user-oriented content to the top of the page. That knowledge has raised the visibility of SEOmoz as well, which announced in May that it had raised $18 million in venture capital.
