Colleges and universities will take a multi-pronged approach to ensure that graduates are ready for the increasing demands of a highly skilled labor force.
First, they will step up opportunities that are “baked in” to curricular learning for internships, entrepreneur networking, study abroad, independent research and civic scholarship. Second, they will focus on the individual student e-portfolio where each student develops a “college résumé” to complement the traditional transcript. The e-portfolio will record every achievement and project, in class and out, showcasing to potential employers the integration of the studen's acumen, drive, teamwork and innovative thinking. Third, partnerships between colleges and the business sector will become the norm, where businesspeople and campus members will advise and mentor students for the job market, while parents and alumni will run hometown networking events where students can connect with local professionals.
This renewed focus is driven only partly by political and economic pressure. Pedagogical research and work-place surveys concur that students engaged in “experiential and deep learning” learn faster, retain more and double their odds of being engaged in their working careers after graduation.
